The best wine in the world

Castillo Ygay Grand Special Reserve 2010

In Marqués de Murrieta they describe this wine as «the perpetuity of a great, fruit of the knowledge of the years. Centennial label, icon of the Great Reserves of La Rioja, of resounding quality and elegance. Made exclusively in the excellent vintages of our best vineyards, it is presented full of renewed depth, complexity and liveliness. A living legend of Rioja, who has been able to maintain himself for three centuries, destined to break the mold due to his surprising liveliness».

The grapes to make this wine are selected from a vintage of excellent quality in the 40-hectare La Plana estate, planted in 1950 and located in the highest area of Finca Ygay, at 485 meters above sea level. It is made with 85% Tempranillo and 15% Mazuelo.

The clusters are destemmed and gently crushed. The grapes ferment separately in stainless steel tanks, with temperature control. The vatting lasts 11 days during which continuous “pumping” and “punching” work is carried out, to favor the contact of the must with the skins and cause a slow and natural extraction of aromas and polyphenols. The wine is aged for 24 months in 225-litre American and French oak barrels.

Tasting note and pairing

Elegant aromatic range in which the fruity contribution of strawberry and ripe raspberry is enhanced with aromas of cloves and nutmeg, tea leaves, fine leather and graphite. On the palate, it is a deep, fresh and refined wine; with a long finish and velvety tannins. If there is something that stands out in this wine, it is undoubtedly the impeccable balance between each and every one of its components. In the words of María Vargas, winemaker at Marqués de Murrieta: “The excellence of the 2010 vintage has given us a Castillo Ygay that we believe will be unforgettable.”
